Naples – A City of Contrasts and the Best Pizza of My Life

Naples took me by surprise in the best possible way. It’s a city full of contrasts—busy, chaotic, with a bit of rubbish here and there, yet at the same time, it exudes an energy that is absolutely captivating. The vibe is unique, lively, and impossible to ignore.

One of the highlights of my trip was the breathtaking coastline. The views from the port were simply mesmerizing. Sitting there, taking it all in, I felt an overwhelming sense of gratitude. It was one of those rare moments where you’re completely present, fully appreciating the beauty in front of you. And then, of course, there’s the food. Naples is the undisputed king of pizza. Every pizzeria, no matter how small or unassuming, serves an incredible slice. I tried several, and each one was a masterpiece in its own right. There’s something special about the way they make pizza here—so simple yet so perfect.

Another thing that struck me was the Italian lifestyle, particularly in Naples. People stay up late, much later than in the UK. Dining at 10 p.m. is completely normal, and restaurants and cafes remain lively well into the night. It adds to the city’s charm and makes you feel like time moves differently here.

When I compare Naples to other places I visited in Italy, I have to say the food in Naples stood out the most. In Milan, Lake Como, and even Sardinia, I found myself a little underwhelmed by the pasta dishes. They often felt too simple—just pasta with tomato sauce, missing that extra depth of flavor. A little more seasoning, some garlic, or extra spices would have elevated the dishes.

But Naples? Naples had it all. The food, the views, the energy—everything about it made me fall in love with the city.

10 Must-Do Things in Naples

Naples is a city full of life, history, and, of course, amazing food. Whether you love exploring hidden streets, admiring stunning architecture, or indulging in delicious local cuisine, Naples has something for everyone. Here are my top 10 recommendations for things to do in this incredible city:

1. Get Lost in the Centro Storico

Wandering through Naples’ historic center is an experience in itself. The narrow, winding streets are full of energy, lined with small, hidden pizzerias, local shops, and centuries-old buildings. There’s something magical about simply getting lost here and soaking in the atmosphere.

2. Visit Galleria Umberto I

This architectural masterpiece is a must-see. The glass-domed ceiling and intricate design make it one of the most beautiful galleries in Italy. Whether you’re shopping, grabbing a coffee, or just admiring the view, it’s a spot you won’t want to miss.

3. Take a City Sightseeing Bus

If you don’t feel like walking everywhere (I did over 20,000 steps in a day, and it was exhausting but worth it!), the hop-on-hop-off sightseeing bus is a great way to see Naples. It stops at major attractions, museums, and historical sites, making it easier to explore the city without getting too tired.

4. Stroll Along the Coastline and Port

The Naples coastline is breathtaking, and you’ll find plenty of restaurants and bars with stunning sea views. Whether you’re grabbing a drink, enjoying a meal, or just taking in the scenery, this is my number one must-do in Naples.

5. See the Stunning Metro Toledo

Even if you don’t usually pay attention to metro stations, Metro Toledo will change that. It’s known as one of the most beautiful metro stations in the world, with mesmerizing blue mosaic ceilings that make you feel like you’re underwater.

6. Try the Local Desserts

Naples is famous for its pastries, and you simply cannot leave without trying Sfogliatella or Babà. There are plenty of bakeries, but I found one place that I loved so much I went back every single day!

7. Explore Castel dell’Ovo

This seaside castle offers some of the best panoramic views of the Gulf of Naples. It’s also one of the oldest castles in the city, full of history and legends.

8. Visit the Underground Naples (Napoli Sotterranea)

Beneath the bustling streets of Naples lies an underground world of tunnels, caves, and ancient ruins. It’s a fascinating way to see the city from a completely different perspective.

9. Marvel at Piazza del Plebiscito

This grand square is one of the most iconic spots in Naples, surrounded by impressive buildings like the Royal Palace and the Basilica of San Francesco di Paola. It’s the perfect place to stop, take photos, and soak in the city’s historic charm.

10. Take a Day Trip to Mount Vesuvius or Pompeii

If you have time, a visit to Mount Vesuvius or the ancient city of Pompeii is a must. Seeing the ruins of Pompeii, frozen in time by the volcanic eruption, is an unforgettable experience. You can hike up Mount Vesuvius for stunning views or explore the eerie ruins of this once-thriving Roman city.

Naples truly has it all—history, stunning views, and the best food in Italy. Whether you’re wandering through the old streets, enjoying the coastline, or indulging in delicious local treats, there’s something special about this city that makes you want to return.
