Best Of Lake Como

Lake Como feels like stepping into a different world. The stillness of the water, the pastel-colored villas nestled in the hills, and the scent of blooming flowers made it feel like a fairytale.
One of my favorite moments was taking a boat ride across the lake. The soft waves rocked the boat gently as I admired the grand villas lining the shore, imagining what it must be like to wake up to such a view every morning. At one point, the captain pointed out a villa where George Clooney supposedly stays, and we all craned our necks in excitement, half-joking that we might see him waving from a window.
Later, while exploring the charming village of Bellagio, I stumbled upon a tiny café with a view over the water. The owner, a sweet elderly woman, spoke little English, but she smiled warmly as she served me a cappuccino and a slice of homemade cake. Sitting there, with the lake shimmering under the afternoon sun, I felt completely at peace.
Here are the top tips for visiting Lake Como, whether you’re exploring charming villages, taking in breathtaking views, or indulging in local cuisine:
1. Visit Bellagio, Varenna & Menaggio
These are the most beautiful and iconic towns. Bellagio is elegant with grand villas, Varenna is romantic with colorful houses, and Menaggio is more relaxed with stunning lakefront views.
2. Take a Scenic Boat Ride
A ferry or private boat tour is the best way to experience the lake’s beauty. Opt for a hop-on-hop-off ferry pass to explore multiple towns in one day.
3. Explore Villa del Balbianello & Villa Carlotta
These historic villas offer breathtaking gardens and lake views. Villa del Balbianello (famous from Star Wars & James Bond) is a must-see.
4. Stay Overnight for the Best Experience
Day trips are nice, but staying a night or two allows you to enjoy the serene mornings and magical sunsets without the crowds.
5. Dine at a Lakeside Restaurant
Try local dishes like risotto al pesce persico (perch fish risotto) or pizzoccheri (buckwheat pasta with cheese and greens) while enjoying lake views.
6. Take the Funicular to Brunate
From Como town, take the funicular up to Brunate for panoramic views over the lake and Alps.
7. Visit During the Shoulder Seasons (Spring or Fall)
Avoid the summer crowds and enjoy pleasant weather in April-June or September-October.
8. Pack for Changing Weather
Lake Como’s weather can shift quickly, so bring layers, sunglasses, and a light rain jacket.
9. Rent a Scooter or E-Bike for Adventure
A fun way to explore the winding roads around the lake, with stunning views at every turn.
